Strong, Quiet, Passionate Types,

This week's message is inspired by a quote from George Washington, who wisely said:

"Associate with men of good quality if you
esteem your own reputation; for it is better
to be alone than in bad company."

1. Summit Mt. Everest with Apa Sherpa, a chronicle of pictures presented by John Gray, Friday 2/15 7:30pm

This Friday we are featuring an evening with three Strong, Quiet types: John Gray, Mt. Everest, and Devil's Canyon Scotch Ale.

After all, February is Strong Beer Month. And we need something strong to stand up to the breathtaking images John Gray is going to share with you on Friday. John is the quiet mechanic behind the counter here at Passion Trail Bikes. Meticulous to a fault, his attention to detail and determination to think things through, step by step, are qualities that without doubt contributed to his success as a mountaineer.

Please come enjoy an evening at Passion Trail Bikes as John recounts his adventure with slides, movies and narrative about his time with the Climbing for a Cure expedition, in which he, his climbing partner Rob Chang, and Apa Sherpa summitted Mount Everest together.

John's presentation will start about 7:30pm. Please bring a friend, and come early to claim your chair, as we might run out!

2. Trailwork 2/16, 9am at Waterdog, very special helpers needed

This Saturday we will begin a major effort to improve a much under-used trail in Waterdog Lake Park. Trail 13 is shown on the map as a dashed blue loop around the lake. If you've ever tried to take this trail, you know that it is impassable on the side opposite the dam. The exisiting trail is actually below the high water mark when the lake is full, and in the back the willows and poison oak have taken over.

Come help us begine to re-align this trail to move it out of the riparian zone and restore the complete loop for recreational use. We are looking for experienced trail work volunteers who don't mind some exposure to the winter-bare twigs of poison oak to help clear the corridor so we can move the trail up on the hillside.

This work needs to be done now before the PO starts to leaf out. If you are highly sensitive to poison oak, we recommend you skip this project, but if you are one of those folks who don't get a bad reaction to poison oak exposure, we could really use your help. This important work will allow us to clear the PO from the corridor now, and allow everyone else to participate later on in the season as we start construction.

We will be meeting at the corner of Lake Road and Lyall Way in Belmont at 9:00am Saturday 2/16. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and bring a change of clothes for your trip home in the car. Please sign up on the Trailworkers.com website so Patty can know you are coming. Call 650-620-9798 for answers to any questions you might have.

3. Friday Pre-Slideshow Hookey Ride 2/15, 3:00pm, Waterdog

Peter is planning a fun ride from the shop for people inclined to duck out a bit early on this three-day weekend. Meet at 2:30ish at Passion Trail Bikes for a launch time of 3:00pm. Plan on a tour of pretty much all the trails in Waterdog Park, and maybe a drop down through the dirt jumps at Carlmont/DMC.

Bring a blinkie light for the trip back to the shop, sometime about dusk. Patty will have some grillables set out for hungry riders, and if you bring a change of clothes you can hang out all comfortable-like eating and drinking until John starts up his slide show.

4. Day Trip All-Day Ride 10am 2/18, Presidents Day, Soquel Demonstration State Forest

You like Demo? Well, Monday we are going to ride there. All. Day. Long. Two, maybe three loops, or maybe just one. Ridge, Sawpit, Tractor, Braille. Hihn's Mill. Want to join us?

There will be two, probably three groups. Charles will lead the big ride, on his big bike. At the other end of the spectrum, Patty will lead the ultra-casual Fat Bottomed Girls Ride, on her little bike, with her little brown dog, at a very little pace. Somebody, we are not sure who yet, will decide to bail in the middle of the big ride to make just a medium-sized ride. So you can ride big, medium, or little, your choice, and if you bring a ride partner who isn't exactly the same speed or fitness level as you are, there will be a good ride for everyone.

Email Patty with questions: patty@passiontrailbikes.com Meet at the slide on Highland Way at the civilized hour of 10am. Bring a lunch, and plenty of water. Oh, and bring sunscreen.

7. Reserve a bike for our 2nd Anniversary Spring Demo Days 3/15, 3/16

We are lining up a whole stable full of bikes for you to saddle up and take out for a nice ride. Specialized will be bringing this:

And inside will be something like this:

We are also expecting bikes from Maverick, Ibis, Santa Cruz, Giant and Turner to be available for test rides. We will also have the BBQ going along with a nice spread of yummy side dishes, snacks, and of course, the all important brews and eanabs. Rides will go out to Waterdog every couple of hours.

We are taking reservations for test rides now, but at this point, it's just to get a feel for what people are looking for, so we can do our best in the test-bike procurement department. No guarantees YET, on exactly what we will have, but you can put a request in by emailing charles@passiontrailbikes.com with your current bike model and size, your future dream bike and size, and which day you want to ride (Saturday or Sunday). We will put you down on the list and hopefully nab you a good test bike to have fun on. And keep yer St. Patrick's Day weekend free to ride a cool new bike, for goodness sakes!

Enjoy this great weekend, and we hope to see you soon! The PTB crew --
