1. Halloween Party at Passion November 1st

Friday night is the night for little kids. This year Saturday night is for big kids! Plan on joining us for a super fun candlelit evening of socializing and scaring each other with our alter-egos. Party starts at 6:30pm and runs until the candles burn down. Healthy finger food to dilute all that candy you ate, intoxicating conversation, boiling beverages, what more could you want? Oh, costumes. Wear one! Bring leftover bags of funsize candy to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

2. 16th Annual Tour of the S.F. Hills Sunday Nov 2

16th Annual Tour of the S.F. Hills
Sunday, November 2nd, 9am

Meet at the parking lot across the street from the Marina Safeway at 9A.M.

The ride explores a multitude of neighborhoods in the city, taking the most difficult path from cafe to taqueria. With the many hilltops in the city, and with the usual good luck with weather conditions, the riders are treated to frequent magnificent views.

The parade of cyclists winding down Lombard St. and then climbing the 32% grade on Filbert St. always attracts the attention of tourists. Other sites explored on the ride are Potrero Hill (with the fast descent down the "other" crookedest street in the world), Coit Tower, Nob Hill, and Mt. Davidson. A bonus feature is the optional ascent of the Broderick St. sidewalk in Pacific Heights. This street, below the Levi mansion, is so steep that it is blocked off to traffic - the upper half being a driveway more crooked than Lombard St.

A casual pace on the ride ensures that the attrition rate is low, but the prospect of climbing Hill St. after scarfing burritos in the Mission always sheds a few riders.

llanes5

On November 8th Gaint will be hosting the second annual benefit race for Tara Llanes called appropriately enough the “Race for Tara 2.” It is at Sand Hill Ranch and is a 4x race. We are really trying to raise the bar this year and raise more money to help Tara with her recovery efforts. If you have not been to her myspace in a while here is the address for your convenience http://www.myspace.com/mtbtara You can see her putting a spin bike thru the paces in a short video and just catch up with her in general. If you would simply like to make a contribution to Tara or buy a T-shirt or a hoody or whatever else she has available check out http://www.tarallanesroadtorecovery.com.

6. Belmont NMBP Trail Patrol?

The City of Belmont has expressed an interest in starting a National Mountain Bike Patrol program for Waterdog Park. NMBP is modeled after the National Ski Patrol and is a fun volunteer program that involves minimal extra effort other than riding your bike on the trails in the park. Patrollers learn CPR and first aid, and communications protocols to assist the City of Belmont as well as enhance visitor safety and in the park. If you think you might like to participate, drop Patty a note at patty@passiontrailbikes.com. Details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

7. Belmont City Council & Parks Commission to discuss Strategic Plan Nov 5th

Belmont usually has a joint meeting with both the City Council and the Parks Commission each year to discuss big picture stuff related to the Parks & Recreation Department. This coming Wednesday, Nov 5, at 7:00PM, they will be meeting, and one item on the agenda is creating a Strategic Plan for parks. Check out the agenda here, and click on item D for a look at the discussion notes. If you live in Belmont, I'm sure they would welcome your input on how you would like to see Belmont's parks, openspace and trails managed.

8. Story about the Resolution in SJ Merc

There is an article in today's San Jose Mercury News about a man who came to El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve from Australia to visit the crash site of the Resolution. It's a touching human interest story, and you can read it here.

9. Useful but little-known weather page for trail riders: NOAA Real Time Weather Stations Map

It's a fact: the bay area is comprised of many, many microclimates. The Coastal Ranges rise from the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, and as the air flows up and over the various saddles and peaks along the ridge, water can get squeezed out in some areas and not others. Wind gets concentrated in some places and attenuated in others. There are a number of weather monitoring stations that can give you much more accurate information about what the weather is like up in the Open Space Preserves than you can get from a generic forecast for a given zipcode. Go here http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/mwmap.php?map=mtr&limit=1
and bookmark the page in your web browser. You'll find it handy as we transition from the summer drought to the winter monsoon season.

To use the map, click on one of the + signs for details from that weather station, including elevation, lat/long and current weather conditions. The tail on the plus sign shows wind speed and direction. Station 59 is the San Carlos Airport, Station 66 is the Pulgas Water Temple on Canada Road, and Waterdog is right between them. Station 62 is the CDF station at La Honda, and ECdM is 8 miles north of that.
