Word.

Let's clean it up. Trash out, love in. Riders who hang out in the forums at Ridemonkey and RideSFO are organizing this cleanup day. We are recruiting helpers so we can keep this area clean and tidy. Garbage will be hauled out, including some dumped furniture, and the area will be scoured for random bottles, broken glass or other trash.

Bring buckets and brooms to sweep glass, work gloves, tongs or rakes for retrieving trash from bushes, garbage bags and any other tools you think might be handy. Meet at the white fence on Village Drive.

3. Soquel Forest Trailwork Saturday January 17th 9:30AM

Finished Trail Feature

We kicked off the season with a special holiday workday on Braille. 6 of us met up at the parking lot, then carpooled down to the bottom of Braille to work our way up. Our main goal was to make sure the drains were ready for the wet season, and to clear a couple of trees that had come down.

As we worked our way up the trail I was amazed how well the trail was holding up. We've work to make the trail last longer with less work, and it's really paying off. The 6 of us were able to get most of the way up the trail and clear all of the downed trees.

On the way out we weren't able to pass up a great opportunity to add another classic feature to the trail. One of the downed trees was the perfect place for a really solid ramp. It took 4 of us just to move the log into place! That thing is solid, and will stay that way for a long time.

Ed is a master of the chainsaw; this feature is now carefully marked for your safety

We've arranged a very special treat for any volunteer that does 3 workdays this year! 6 people already have a head start, come on out to the next trailwork and find out more about the volunteer appreciation day at the end of May!

4. Waterdog Trailwork Sunday January 18th, 9:00AM

Skinny on Canyon Creek Trail could use some poison oak removal

We aren't sure what will be the project next week. Probably, finishing up brushing upper Finch Trail, and then starting down Rambler to Canyon Creek Trail. Please save the date and plan on helping out.

5. Caltrain wants to hear from cyclists

We got the following note from the San Francisco Bike Coalition:

If you ride Caltrain with your bike you know that 1) it's an excellent service most of the time and 2) getting "bumped" is a giant drag that seriously compromises the excellence of the service. After much advocacy by the SFBC's BIKES ONboard campaign, Caltrain staff have agreed to a "modest" increase in capacity per bike car by spring, and they've asked to hear from cyclists as they prepare their proposal for the Caltrain board of directors meeting on February 5. Act now -- send an email to Caltrain by January 15 telling them we need 80 bikes per train, so we won't get bumped anymore! See the BIKES ONboard web page for background and details.

6. We need YOUR comment about bicycling in National Parks EASY TO DO!

The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has proposed a rule change which will make it easier for parks to open trails for mountain bikers. We are now in a 60-day commentary period and must be successful on all fronts to make the change official.  Right now, donations from mountain bikers like you are critical in supporting our advocacy team's efforts, which is striving to:
  • Register 20,000 public comments supporting the rule change
  • Attend meetings across the country with key stakeholders
  • Continue reaching out to trail user groups to discuss the improvements the rule change will bring to National Parks

Please take a moment to support possible riding opportunities in National Parks!
